Community Health Survey
The Community Health Survey (CHS) is the LVCHA's quantitative inquiry of health priorities as well as barriers to and facilitators to health in Little Village. The CHS was developed in a participatory fashion in partnership with our faculty, student and community partners, building off of other existing CHS tools and population based surveys (like Sinai Urban Health Institute Community Health Survey and UIC’s UNISON CHS).
The LVCHA's qualitative research informed most of the questions in the CHS. We also aimed to capture insight not already known from other sources (public health surveillance databases, population-based surveys). Our CHS emphasizes issues relating to immigration, ethnic identity and work/occupation, which are issues typically absent from community health surveys. The final survey included 99 questions - click below to download them!
Research design and data collection
The community health survey was piloted online, but quickly it was agreed that the best way to collect data was with a paper and pencil version. Twelve Community Data Collectors from Telpochcalli Community Education Project, Taller de Jose, Padres Angeles and UIC students were identified and trained in human subjects and survey research methodology. The data collection was piloted at TCEP. The survey was administered by a community data collector who was able to walk the participant through the survey. Community data collectors administered surveys at community meetings, waiting rooms and other public spaces where community members gather.
A total of 288 surveys were collected. We engaged in participatory data analysis and dissemination of findings. Click the links below to learn more about each step of the process, as well as the survey findings.
